Founded on October 12, 1935, the Long Lake Fire Department has long been a vital presence in the central Adirondacks. Originally outfitted with twin American LaFrance fire trucks built in Elmira, NY, one of those vintage vehicles remains preserved at the Adirondack Experience, the Museum on Blue Mountain Lake.

Today, the department operates out of a modern facility opened in December 2015 and continues to respond to emergencies with a team of 25 active members, including four Junior Members. The department is always seeking new volunteers, including seasonal residents who are active and in good standing with their home fire departments.

The Long Lake Fire Department is led by Fire Chief Marty Pierce, with support from 1st Assistant Chief Michael Lamphear, 2nd Assistant Chief Erik Arsenault, and Captain Eric Hample. The administrative team includes President Jim Piraino, Vice President Craig Wamback, Secretary Shawnee Ross, and Treasurer Ceci Bush. The department is also governed by a Board of Directors comprised of Jim Piraino, Erik Arsenault, Amber Wamback, and Keith Wamback.

In addition to emergency response, the LLFD plays an active role in community life. Annual events include Fire Prevention Week education, participation in the Long Lake Memorial Day Parade, the July 4th Sausage and Pepper Cookout, the traditional Pork Dinner fundraiser each February, and Santa’s Ride in December. The department also collaborates with the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office to conduct Mock DWI and Distracted Driving demonstrations for students at Long Lake Central School. Over the years they’ve partnered with the American Red Cross, including the installation of smoke detectors in homes to improve safety.

To maintain readiness, members train year-round with monthly drills covering ice water rescues, pump operations, ladder use, and more. Recent grants have helped fund upgraded radios and wildland firefighting turnout gear.

The department’s current fleet includes a 2005 LaFrance Engine (21E60), a 2020 Rosenbauer Engine (21E56), a Rescue Truck (21R57), a Brush Truck (21E58), an ATV for backcountry emergencies, as well as pontoon and air boats for water and ice rescues. A newly acquired battery-powered Jaws of Life adds critical capability for auto extrications.

Company C, the department’s auxiliary group, provides vital support at emergency scenes and during public events, offering food, water, and logistics to firefighters and first responders.

The Long Lake Fire Department holds its monthly meetings on the first Monday of each month at 7 p.m. Donations to support the department’s ongoing work may be mailed to:
