Join the Town of Long Lake and the Long Lake Historical Society on Tuesday, June 20th at 5pm at the Long Lake Town Hall, 1204 Main Street, Long Lake, N.Y. for a presentation on Seneca Ray Stoddard.

Seneca Ray Stoddard (1844–1917) was an American landscape photographer known for his photographs of New York‘s Adirondack Mountains. He was also a naturalist, a writer, a poet, an artist, and a cartographer. His writings and photographs helped to popularize the Adirondacks.

The majority of Stoddard’s life work in photographs is split into two large collections, one at the Chapman Historical Museum in Glens Falls, and the other at the Adirondack Museum in Blue Mountain Lake, New York

This event will focus on the life of Stoddard and center on pictures he took in Long Lake, New York and the surrounding area.

At 5pm the documentary Seneca Ray Stoddard: An American Original will be screened with provided by the Long Lake Historical Society. Local Author Daniel Way and Long Lake Historian Hallie Bond will follow up with presentations on Stoddard featuring on his work, life and more.

After the movie, presentations and slide show, Dr Way will be hosting a book signing for his latest book, Seneca Ray Stoddard: An Intimate Portrait of an Adirondack Legend and answering questions. Throughout the event there will be other copies of local Stoddard pictures to view, courtesy of Long Laker Jimmy Cooney.

This event is sponsored by the Long Lake Parks & Recreation Department, the Long Lake Historical Society, with special guest Dr. Daniel Way, Hallie Bond and Jimmy Cooney.

Light Refreshments will be served by the Long Lake Historical Society.

During his 37-year career as a Family Physician, Dr Way wrote three books between 2004 and 2016 chronicling his Adirondack medical career and the many patients he came to know: All in a Day’s Work: Scenes and Stories from an Adirondack Medical Practice; Never a Dull Moment, and We Were There: World War II Stories from the Adirondacks’ Greatest Generation. Each book includes many richly illustrated patient vignettes that venerate the doctor-patient relationship while describing the joys and frustrations of practicing rural primary care in Upstate New York’s Adirondack Park.

Since retiring, he has completed work on his most recent book, Seneca Ray Stoddard; An Intimate Look at an Adirondack Legend.  It includes almost 300 illustrations and covers new ground that celebrates many facets of the legendary Victorian-era photographer/environmentalist/author/traveler/surveyor/lecturer/publisher, including many that have never been published before.

You can learn more about his writing and photography on his website at www.danielway.com and on Facebook.
