DESCRIPTION:1pm. Mt Sabattis Recreation Area. Contestants will complete a set of tasks and scavenger hunt around Mt Sabattis for points towards the Survivor’s Shield. Tasks will range from basic first aid skills in nature\, problem solving\, rudimentary engineering and athletic coordination. This event is open to ages 9 and over\, and under 9 with an accompanying adult\, guardian or babysitter. SUMMARY:Rough Raquette Snowshoe Race
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the first ever Rough Raquette on Saturday\, Feb. 18\, 2023\, 9 a.m. in Raquette Lake. The Rough Raquette is a 5K snowshoe or one-mile fun run or walk. The completely flat course will take place on the ice\, starting near town and head toward South Bay before looping back to town. It is an out and back race. The race will start out on the ice approximately ¼ mile from the village. Be sure to allow time to get to the starting area after your arrival. The 1 mile fun run and 5K run concurrently and share the same course for the first ½ mile. Loaner snowshoes will not be available.\nIt is Winter Carnival Weekend in Raquette Lake and we encourage you to stick around to take advantage of the other events in town. Youth activities start at 11 a.m. and include plenty of fun games. Ladies Frying Pan Toss at 12 Noon\, Ice Golf at 2 p.m. and bonfire all day. Fireworks on Saturday night at dusk! On Sunday at noon\, it’s the Timed Cross-cut and chainsaw competition. Competitors welcome! For more information on the Winter Carnival call 518-624-3077.\n\n\n9 a.m. Packet pick up begins at 8 a.m. on the ice\, in front of the Raquette Lake Supply.\n\nVillage of Raquette Lake. On the ice in front of the store.\n\nFacilities\nThe race venue is completely outside on the lake. Be prepared with warm clothing and dry clothes for after the race. Keep in mind winds on the lake can be strong at times. Suggested clothing includes warm layers\, gloves\, hat\, long tights or waterproof breathable pants. Snowshoes can be any style – metal\, plastic or wood. We will have a campfire going near the start line. There will be portable toilets nearby on shore.\n\nParking\nFree parking is available in the village\, but space is limited. Please plan to carpool if possible.\n\nWeather\nIn the unlikely event of no snow\, we can still participate on the ice. A decision will be made 15 minutes before the race if snowshoes will be worn based on race day conditions. It is your responsibility to make sure that you have suitable traction devices that are safe for you to walk or run on. Recommended traction includes Kahtoola MicroSpikes or NanoSpikes. You can also make your own pair of screw shoes.\n\nIn the event of unsafe ice or windchill temperatures below -10\, the race will not take place. A decision will be made by noon on the day prior to the race.\n\nEntry Fee/Registration\nIn lieu of a registration fee\, participants are asked to make a suggested donation in the amount of $30 for the 5K and $20 for the 1 mile fun run/walk. All money raised will benefit the Camp Huntington Historic Building Preservation Fund.\n\nOnline race registration will be accepted. Registration day of the event will need to be cash or check only. Knowing that the weather cannot be predicted and winter everchanging\, the name\, Rough Raquette seemed appropriate. All proceeds from the event will go toward the historic preservation efforts at Camp Huntington\, also known as\, Camp Pine Knot.\n\nCamp Pine Knot is the first Great Camp of the Adirondacks and was originally built by William West Durant beginning in the mid-1870s. DESCRIPTION:Winter Birding Weekend in the Adirondacks! \nSaturday & Sunday\, January 28-29\, 2023 \n  \nEnjoy a weekend of birding trips in the Adirondacks this winter.  Participants will look for winter irruptive species such as Bohemian Waxwings\, Evening Grosbeaks\, and Pine Grosbeaks\, along with year-round boreal residents such as Ruffed Grouse\, Black-backed Woodpecker\, Canada Jay\, and Boreal Chickadee.  There is a bumper seed crop on the Ash Trees which has already enticed large numbers of Evening Grosbeaks into the Adirondacks this fall.  While cones are in short supply this winter\, there is an abundance of fruit to attract Bohemian Waxwings and Pine Grosbeaks.  And of course\, we will be on the lookout for northern owls also! \n  \nField Trips:  Joan Collins will lead field trips on both days.  Both Saturday and Sunday morning\, meet outside the Adirondack Hotel at 7 a.m. (near the bridge over Long Lake on Route 30).  Participants can drive in their own vehicles\, or car-pool\, if they are comfortable\, to reduce the number of cars in the train. \n  \nSocial Dinner:  This year\, we are once again adding a social dinner back into the weekend plan!  On Saturday evening\, we can gather in the Adirondack Hotel dining room at 6 p.m. to enjoy a meal together. \n  \nRegistration is required to attend the field trips.  Call the Long Lake Parks and Recreation Department at 518-624-3077 to register.  There is a maximum of 25 participants for each field trip. \n  \nPlaces to Stay: \nA few possible places to stay in Long Lake (central Adirondacks): \n\nAdirondack Hotel (near the bridge over Long Lake) – hotel with a restaurant: https://adirondackhotel.com/\nLong View Lodge (on the southern end of the lake) – lodge with a restaurant: https://thelongviewlodge.com/\nShamrock Motel and Cottages (a motel unit or cabins on the lake with kitchen): http://www.shamrockmotellonglake.com/\nMotel Long Lake and Cottages (also a motel unit or cabins (all recently renovated) on the lake with a kitchen): https://www.motellonglake.com/\n\nThere are lots more places to stay (along with Airbnb’s). \n  \nBreakfast/Lunch: Stewarts opens at 5 a.m. and offers quick breakfast items.  Depending on the itineraries for Saturday and Sunday\, lunch can be ordered (if needed) from the Adirondack Trading Post in Long Lake\, the new Newcomb Café\, or Well Dressed Food in Tupper Lake (menus will be provided in the morning). \n  \nThe Winter Birding Weekend is sponsored by the Long Lake Parks and Recreation Department and cosponsored by Northern New York Audubon.
