SUMMARY:Mosaic Steppingstone Class
DESCRIPTION:In this summer themed mosaic steppingstone class\, you will create a unique stepping stone for your yard.   You will choose your design from a number of different patterns\, then select all the glass from a nice array of colors and textures.  You will learn how to cut the glass and grind it to fit the pattern.  You will then affix your focal point glass pieces to the stone with special cement and fill in the background with smaller pieces of glass. The cement needs to be totally dry before the stone can be grouted\, so we will do a demonstration stone to show everyone how to apply the grout.  You will take the grout powder home for mixing and grouting in a few days. \nThe cost for the class is $45 per person.  All materials and tools are included.  Safety glasses and gloves will be provided.  Registration and pre-payment is required.  Please email pokrentowski@aol.com to register.  Mary will respond to your email to confirm space availability. Maximum 8 students. \nCancellations made at least 1 week prior to the first day of a class will receive a 100% refund. No refunds or exchanges will be made for failing to attend the class without prior notice. \nIn the event that we must cancel the class\, a full refund for the class will be issued. \nIt is a good idea to wear long pants and closed shoes when working with glass. \nThe instructor\, Mary Pokrentowski\, has been making and teaching stained glass for over 30 years. \n

SUMMARY:Music by the Lake: Green River Tribute Band
DESCRIPTION:6-8pm. Long Lake Town Beach. Featuring: Green River Tribute Band \nGreen River – The #1 Nationally Touring Creedence Clearwater Revival/John Fogerty Tribute Show is the brain child of native New Yorker Rick Horvath. Noodles as he is affectionately known\, was born to perform this music. He started singing CCR songs in his very first band when he was only 13 years old. \nCCR was an American rock band active in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Their musical style encompassed the roots rock and swamp rock genres. Creedence Clearwater Revival’s music is still a staple of American radio airplay and the band has sold 30 million albums in the United States alone. \nThe show is very faithful to a live CCR performance. Listeners enjoy a full 90 minute show of their favorite CCR classics (Bad Moon Rising\, Proud Mary\, Up Around the Bend to name a few) and songs that Creedence would turn into live jams such as Born on the Bayou and Susie Q. The band also mixes in John Fogerty classics including The Old Man Down the Road and Centerfield capturing the energy of his current show. \nCoolers and lawn chairs are welcome. \nThis project is made possible with funds from the Statewide Community Regrants Program\, a regrant program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature and administered by the Adirondack Lakes Center for the Arts.

SUMMARY:Birding Hike with Joan Collins
DESCRIPTION:Join Joan Collins on this exciting birding trip into the William C. Whitney Wilderness Area north of the Town of Long Lake.  Meet at Shaw Pond parking lot in Long Lake (1 mile east of Stewart’s on Route 28N) at 6:30 a.m.  The trip will begin with birding at Shaw wetlands in Long Lake. The beaver dam creating the pond was destroyed in floods during the summer of 2023\, so we can see how the wildlife has changed this year along Shaw Brook. (A restroom break at the bridge over Long Lake is an option after Shaw wetlands.) Next\, we will make a few birding stops along Route 30 before heading to the William C. Whitney Wilderness Area. Along Sabattis Circle Road we will make stops at several locations\, including the scenic inlet of Little Tupper Lake and Sabattis Bog.  Eighteen warbler species breed along this road including Northern Waterthrush\, Mourning\, Palm\, and Canada Warblers.  Many boreal species can be found along Sabattis Circle Road including\, Black-backed Woodpecker\, Olive-sided and Yellow- bellied Flycatchers\, Canada Jay\, Boreal Chickadee\, and Lincoln’s Sparrow.  Little Tupper Lake and Sabattis Bog are within the William C. Whitney Wilderness Area\, a designated Important Birding Area (IBA) by Audubon New York. Temperate deciduous and boreal forests make up most of the surrounding area\, with over 30% of the IBA being wetlands. Bring insect repellent\, hat\, sunscreen\, water\, lunch\, binoculars and appropriate clothing/jacket and footwear. Contact Joan Collins to register at JoanCollins@ADKAvian.com or 518-624-5528.  This field trip is jointly sponsored by Northern New York Audubon and the Long Lake Parks and Recreation Department.  There is a maximum of 15 participants. A rain date for this trip is July 24th\, 2024.

SUMMARY:Music by the Lake: Gratefully Yours
DESCRIPTION:6-8pm. Long Lake Town Beach. Featuring: Gratefully Yours \nGratefully Yours is a Grateful Dead inspired band\, based out of New Paltz\, NY. The band was conceived and founded in 2012 by keyboardist Alex Mazur\, who is also the founder of The Deadbeats; one of the longest running Grateful Dead cover bands in existence.  \nHowever\, “cover band” is an extremely misleading term when it comes to the music of Gratefully Yours. Their willingness and ability to improvise\, and their openness to spontaneity and the energy of the moment lie at the core of their performances and truly sets them apart. In the very best tradition of The Grateful Dead\, it is this openness that allows the crowd to become a part of the creative process and results in a synergy between the band and the crowd that is unique and truly special. It is that magic that Gratefully Yours truly aims to “cover” and pay tribute to.  \nThey also allow their audience to participate further by giving them the opportunity to submit their dream setlists\, which Gratefully Yours just happen to choose and perform. But of course\, you just never know what might happen… \nThe band members are all long time highly regarded players in the scene: Alex Mazur\, Garrin Benfield\, Jude DeFalco\, Frank Casciaro\, Robert Schiff and Jessica Barlow. And they have some very special guests and friends who have and do sit in with them. Zach Nugent (Melvin Seals & JGB)\, Vinnie Amico (moe.)\, Tony Markelis (Trey Anastasio Band)\, Bill Carbone (Max Creek)\, Rob Eaton (Dark Star Orchestra)\, and Russ Lawton (Trey Anastasio Band).  \nCoolers and lawn chairs are welcome.

SUMMARY:The Raquette Lake Railway: Its Origins\, Construction and Its Stations
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our first event of the season.  Inlet Town Historian and author Charles Herr (The Fulton Chain) presents the story of the Raquette Lake Railway based on the research for his recent book. \n \n\nDate: Wednesday\, July 3rd\nTime: 6:30 P.M.\nPlace: Raquette Lake Union School Building\, 115 State Route 28\n\nEnvisioned by Dr. William Seward Webb after purchasing thousands of acres for his Adirondack & St. Lawrence Railroad\, the Raquette Lake Railway’s initial route was determined by a Webb logging contractor forced to build a logging rail line to Lake Rondaxe instead of using river drives\, then expanded through land easements Webb purchased from private and State landowners. The Railway successfully competed with Old Forge’s transportation companies and was financed by the richest capitalists in the country who happened to own Raquette Lake region great camps: Collis Huntington\, J.P. Morgan\, Alfred Vanderbilt\, W. Seward Webb\, William C. Whitney\, Harry Payne Whitney\, and Senator Chauncey Depew. \nUsing numerous images and maps\, Herr provides the origins\, the story of the land transactions\, the building of the Raquette Lake Railway as well as describing the stations identified today by the Route 28 blue highway markers and the reasons for the railroad’s termination. Copies of his book “The Fulton Chain” which includes five chapters on this subject will be available. \nThis event is being co-sponsored by \n\nRaquette Lake Library\nRaquette Lake Navigation Co.\nSt. William’s on Long Point

SUMMARY:Ham Radio Field Days
DESCRIPTION: WHO/WHAT Members of the Bear Bait Radio Club will be participating in the national amateur radio Field Day exercise\, June 22 – 23 at the Mt. Sabattis Picnic Pavilion in Long Lake. Since 1933\, ham radio operators across North America have established temporary ham radio stations in public locations during Field Day to showcase the science and skill of amateur radio. This event is open to the public and all are encouraged to attend.  \nWHEN Saturday and Sunday\, June 22 and 23. On Saturday\, June 22\, from 10AM to 6PM and on Sunday\, June 23\, from 9AM to noon.  \nWHERE Long Lake Pavilion\, 6 Deerland Rd\, Long Lake\, NY 12847  \nWHY Field Day is a showcase for how amateur radio works reliably under any conditions from almost any location to create an independent communications network. “Ham radio functions completely independent of the Internet or cell phone infrastructure\, can interface with laptops or smartphones\, and can be set up almost anywhere in minutes. That’s the beauty of amateur radio during a communications outage\,” says Bob Inderbitzen\, NQ1R\, spokesperson for ARRL The national association for Amateur Radio®\, (www.arrl.org)\, which represents amateur (or “ham”) radio operators across the country. “In today’s electronic do-it-yourself (DIY) environment\, ham radio remains one of the best ways for people to learn about electronics\, physics\, meteorology\, and numerous other scientific disciplines\, and is a huge asset to any community during disasters or emergencies if the standard communication infrastructure goes down\,” Inderbitzen adds. Anyone may become a licensed amateur radio operator. There are more than 750\,000 licensed hams in the United States\, as young as 9 and as old as 100. And with clubs such as Bear Bait Radio Club\, it’s easy for anybody to get involved right here in Long Lake. For more information about Field Day or amateur radio\, contact Scott Marriam\, WA2DTN1@gmail.com or visit www.arrl.org/what-is-ham-radio.
