SUMMARY:Winter Birding Weekend
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy a weekend of birding trips in the Adirondacks this winter.  Participants will look for winter irruptive species such as Bohemian Waxwings\, and winter finch species such as Red and White-winged Crossbills\, Pine Siskins\, Evening Grosbeaks\, and more\, along with year-round boreal residents such as Ruffed Grouse\, Black-backed Woodpecker\, Canada Jay\, and Boreal Chickadee.  Food sources are good this year with abundant fruit and many conifer species have excellent cone crops.  Red Crossbills nested during late summer\, and will likely nest again this winter.  White-winged Crossbills and Pine Siskins are moving in also. \nField Trips:  Joan Collins will lead field trips on both days.  Both Saturday and Sunday morning\, meet outside the Adirondack Hotel at 7 a.m. (near the bridge over Long Lake on Route 30).  Participants can drive in their own vehicles\, or car-pool\, if they are comfortable\, to reduce the number of cars in the train. \nSocial Dinner:  On Saturday evening\, we can gather in the Adirondack Hotel dining room at 6 p.m. to enjoy dinner together. \nRegistration is required to attend the field trips.  Contact Joan Collins to register at JoanCollins@ADKAvian.com or 315-244-7127.  There is a maximum of 20 participants for each field trip. \nPlaces to Stay: \nAdirondack Hotel (near the bridge over Long Lake) – hotel with a restaurant: https://adirondackhotel.com \nLong View Lodge (on the southern end of the lake) – lodge with a restaurant: https://thelongviewlodge.com/ \nPaddler’s Rest (on the eastern side of the lake – a motel unit and cabins on the lake): https://www.paddlersrestlonglake.com/ \nMotel Long Lake and Cottages (also a motel unit or cabins (all recently renovated) on the lake with a kitchen): https://www.motellonglake.com/ \nThere are lots more places to stay (along with Airbnb’s). \nBreakfast/Lunch: Stewarts opens at 5 a.m. and offers quick breakfast items.  Depending on the itineraries for Saturday and Sunday\, lunch can be ordered (if needed) from the Adirondack Trading Post in Long Lake or the new Newcomb Café.  If we go farther afield\, there will be other locations to pick up lunch. \nThe Winter Birding Weekend is sponsored by the Long Lake Parks and Recreation Department and cosponsored by Northern New York Audubon.

Open rink and sledding hill when weather permits. \n2pm – 7pm  The Geiger is open for games and fun and skating and sledding when weather permits \n  \nThe Parks and Recreation Department is excited to announce the Adirondack Local Culture Program This program is made possible through the support of the U.S. Department of Justice\, Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention in the amount of $70\,000 awarded over two years and administrated through a grant through the National Recreation and Park Association and the Town of Long Lake Parks and Recreation Program. \nThe Adirondack Local Culture program combines outdoor recreation activities with indoor games\, crafts and activities on Monday’s and Thursday’s through the winter and spring season in conjunction with Long Lake Central School’s After School Program. On Sunday’s  at the Geiger Arena\, programming will be Adirondack Local Culture Program Family and Community Days.

DESCRIPTION:REGISTRATION & BLOOD PRESSURE CHECKS – 11AM \nPLUNGE at NOON \nThe Town of Long Lake Parks and Recreation Department along with support from the Long Lake Fire Department and the Long Lake Rescue Squad join forces for the long anticipated return of the “Feeling Long Lakey Polar Bear Plunge”  on December 30\, 2023.  The event kicks off on Saturday of New Years weekend at Noon at the Long Lake Town Beach\, 1258 Main Street\, Long Lake NY. \nThis is a fundraising event to benefit the Wounded Warrior Project.  Anyone over the age of 16 is welcome to participate.  Participants will be eligible to win prizes for Best Costume\, Most Money Raised by an Individual\, Most Money Raised by a Team and Best Plunge Technique. \nFundraising efforts support Wounded Warrior Project (WWP) programs and services\, which are provided at no cost to warriors and their families.  Through their efforts at the community level\, the “Feeling Long Lakey Polar Plunge” is directly supporting WWP programs and services for warriors\, which include access to mental and physical health care\, employment assistance\, and education services. \nRegistration will be held at the Adirondack Hotel from 11am – 11:30am on Saturday\, December 30th with the plunge kicking off at Noon at the Town Beach.  The Long Lake Fire Department will be on site to cut the ice and help manage the safety of the Polar Bears and the Long Lake Rescue Squad will be on site checking blood pressure of the participants.  The Parks and Recreation department is seeking volunteers to be on site to hand out towels\, and handle registrations. \nParticipants are asked to bring towels\, robes\, warm clothes and must wear shoes.   There is a heated public restroom at the location and participants will have access to the building to change and to warm up. \nPre-Registration materials and Wounded Warrior Pledge sheets will be available on-line at www.mylonglake.com/polar-plunge and at the Long Lake Town Office Building\, 1130 Deerland Road weekdays from 8:30am – 5pm.  Call 518-624-3077 for more information. \nThere is a minimum of $25 per person fundraising donation to participate.
