DESCRIPTION:American Legion Honors Nation on Independence Day in Inlet & Raquette Lake: Post #1402 Veterans Will Raise Military Service Flags\, Conduct Retired American Flag Disposal Ceremony\, and Commemorate New Banner Display  \nOn July 4th\, American Legion’s Leonard-Mick-Roberts Post #1402 will raise their military service flags at Legion Square in Inlet at 9:30am. The brief ceremony will include a bit of U.S. flag history\, courtesies\, and military flag order of precedence. \nThe Post honors the service and sacrifices of members of the U.S. Army\, Marine Corps\, Navy\, Air Force\, Space Force\, Coast Guard\, and Merchant Marines\, by flying their service flags at Legion Square. In addition\, they display the POW/MIA flag. \nAfter the flag raising in front of the Town Hall\, the Post will perform their annual retired American flag disposal ceremony at 10:30am at Fern Park in Inlet. \nAt 1:00pm\, the Post will commemorate a new banner display at the Raquette Lake Veterans Memorial\, in front of the Raquette Lake Library. The display honors the Post’s namesake members: Philo E. Leonard\, Vincent J. Mick\, and Charles E. Roberts Jr.\, local youths who made the ultimate sacrifice to protect our freedoms during World War Two.

Long Lake Town Hall.  New York State Parks’ Bureau of Marine Services has over 55 years of experience teaching New Yorkers to operate their boats safely. In the last 15 years\, through State Parks network of certified instructors\, we have taught more than 300\,000 people.  \nThe in-classroom course option is designed as a comprehensive study of boating safety to teach the fundamentals of safe boating operation. The course requires a structured classroom setting and has been approved by the National Association of Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA). Sponsored by the Long Lake Association \n\nCancellation Policies\nYou must cancel your registration before Friday\, June 27\, 2025\, at 8:00am CDT. \nIf you are no longer planning on attending this class\, please cancel your registration so that those on the waiting list will have a chance to attend. \n\n\nAge Policy\nAll registrants for this event must be 10 years of age by June 28\, 2025.Student must be 10 years old at the start of the course. \nIf you are 18 years of age or older\, there is a $10.00 fee for your permanent boating safety certificate\, payable to New York State Parks. This is in addition to any course fees paid directly to your instructor. NYS Parks does not collect a certificate fee for students under the age of 18\, but there may be a course fee charged by the instructor. \n\n  \nMotorboats\nBrianna’s Law\nIf you were born on or after May 1\, 1996 you will need a boating safety certificate.\nUnder a new law known as Brianna’s Law\, all motor boat operators born on or after Jan. 1\, 1993 will need a boating safety certificate beginning in 2020.\nThose born on or after Jan. 1\, 1988 will need a boating safety certificate beginning in 2022.\nThose born on or after Jan. 1\, 1983 will need a boating safety certificate beginning in 2023.\nThose born on or after Jan. 1\, 1978 will need a boating safety certificate beginning in 2024.\nAll motor boat operators regardless of age will need a boating safety certificate beginning in 2025.\nApproved courses include those offered by NYS Parks\, the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary\, the U.S. Power Squadrons or U.S.Powerboating. Certain allowances to this law have been made for visitors to New York\, persons renting a boat from a livery and persons purchasing a new boat for the first time. Laying of the wreath at the Town Bridge.\n9am. Memorial Day Parade begins at the Long Lake Town Hall and marches to the Cemetery.\n930am. Ceremonies begin at the Cemetery.\n1030am. Parade marches to the Vietnam Memorial for brief stop\, and then continues marching back to LL Town Hall.

SUMMARY:Birding Hike with Joan Collins
DESCRIPTION:Join Joan Collins for a birding walk on a railbed through wonderful wetlands and forests!  The old railbed travels along Vanderwhacker Brook at the beginning of the walk with fascinating marshes and ponds (and interesting plants!).  There are also boreal forest sections.  We will hike at the pace of the group and our birding\, likely walking a few miles round trip.  Some of the species we may find include: Wood Duck; American Black Duck; Hooded and Common Mergansers; Black-billed Cuckoo; Ruby-throated Hummingbird; Virginia Rail; American Bittern; Great Blue Heron; Broad-winged Hawk; Belted Kingfisher; Black-backed Woodpecker; Eastern Kingbird; Olive-sided Flycatcher; Eastern Wood-Pewee; Yellow-bellied Flycatcher; Alder Flycatcher; Least Flycatcher; Eastern Phoebe; Boreal Chickadee; Winter Wren; Swainson’s Thrush; Hermit Thrush; White-throated Sparrow; Swamp Sparrow; Rusty Blackbird; and many warblers including Ovenbird\, Northern Waterthrush\, Black-and-white Warbler\, Nashville Warbler\, Common Yellowthroat\, Northern Parula\, Magnolia Warbler\, Blackburnian Warbler\, Black-throated Blue Warbler\, Yellow-rumped Warbler\, Black-throated Green Warbler\, and Canada Warbler.  Participants will meet at Overlook Park in Newcomb (restrooms at this location) at 6:30 a.m. and we will car-caravan to a dirt parking area up the hill from the railbed.  Bring food\, water\, a jacket\, appropriate attire/hiking shoes\, binoculars\, hat\, sunscreen\, and insect spray.   \nContact Joan Collins to register at JoanCollins@ADKAvian.com or 518-624-5528.  This field trip is jointly sponsored by Northern New York Audubon and the Long Lake Parks and Recreation Department.  There is a maximum of 15 participants.
